IN BRIEF

RES-TILE IS THE CONTEST CREATED FOR YOUNG PLANNERS AND DESIGNERS AND SUPPORTED BY MIRAGE WITH THE GOAL OF DISCOVERING NEW AESTHETIC BOUNDARIES IN THE PRODUCTION OF CERAMIC SLABS. A BRAND-NEW PROJECT THAT SETS OUT TO ACHIEVE A PRODUCT DESIGN WHICH IS NO LONGER SUBJECT TO CONSTRAINTS OF STYLE TRENDS BUT DICTATED BY ALTERNATIVE APPROACHES TO RE-DEFINE THE VISION OF PORCELAIN STONEWARE TILES.

OBJECTIVES

THE AIM OF RES-TILE IS THAT OF CREATING, IN TERMS OF DESIGN, AN INNOVATIVE CERAMIC COLLECTION VIA AN ORIGINAL INTERPRETATION OF THE MATERIAL AND ITS AESTHETICS. PORCELAIN STONEWARE IS IN FACT CHARACTERISED BY A SPECIAL TEXTURE AND A STRONG VISUAL EFFECT OF THE TILE. THE TERM COLLECTION IS INTENDED AS A SERIES OF TILES SHARING A COMMON CONCEPT AND DEVELOPED IN DIFFERENT SIZES AND COLOURS.

DESIGN FOR MANIFACTURING: RIGHT FROM THE PLANNING STAGE THE PRODUCT MUST BE CONCEIVED AS BEING READY FOR INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTION (SEE “GUIDELINES”).

THE PRODUCT MUST ALSO BE CREATED MAINLY FOR FLOOR APPLICATION THEREFORE THE CLADDING OF A WALL MUST ONLY BE CONSIDERED AS AN ALTERNATIVE DESTINATION OF USE.

THE PROPOSED CERAMIC PRODUCT MUST BE SUITABLE FOR RESIDENTIAL OR “LIGHT COMMERCIAL” APPLICATION, MEANING COMMERCIAL VENUES SUBJECT TO LOW FOOTFALL TRAFFIC SUCH AS RESTAURANTS, SHOPS, CINEMAS AND THE LIKE.

GUIDELINES

THE PRODUCTION OF PORCELAIN STONEWARE IS CHARACTERISED BY AN INDUSTRIAL PROCESS THAT, TOGETHER WITH THE VARIOUS CUSTOMISATION AND PERSONALISATION OPPORTUNITIES OF THE OUTPUT, AND THANKS TO CONTINUAL TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATION, LEAD TO RESTRICTIONS AND PECULIAR FEATURES THAT MUST BE TAKEN INTO CONSIDERATION STARTING FROM THE CREATIVE/PROJECT PHASE IN ORDER TO GUARANTEE THE FEASIBILITY OF THE DEVELOPED CONCEPT (FOR FURTHER INFORMATION HTTP://WWW.MIRAGE.IT/AZIENDA/IL-NOSTRO-GRES-PORCELLANATO/).

  1. THE CHROMATIC RANGETHAT CAN BE CREATED CORRESPONDS TO THE TRADITIONAL FOUR-COLOUR SET CMYK AND TO RAL SCALE. FLUORESCENT COLOURS CANNOT BE PRODUCED.
  2. SQUARE – 60×60, 75×75, 90×90 – AND RECTANGULAR FORMATS – 15×60, 30×60, 40×60, 22,5×90, 45×90, 20×120, 30×120, 60×120, 90×180 – CAN BE CHOSEN. IT IS RECOMMENDED TO REFER TO HTTP://WWW.MIRAGE.IT/ TO VIEW THE COMPLETE RANGE OF MIRAGE PRODUCTS.
  3. THE NOMINAL THICKNESS OF THE MATERIAL MUST RANGE BETWEEN 9.5 MM AND 11 MM.
  4. THERE ARE ABSOLUTELY NO PROBLEMS OR RESTRICTIONS ON HOW THE AESTHETIC APPEARANCE OF THE PORCELAIN STONEWARE CAN BE PERSONALISED.
  5. PORCELAIN STONEWARE CAN BE MANUFACTURED IN THE SAME WAY AS NATURAL STONES, THEREFORE POLISHING AND HONING PROCESSES AS WELL AS TEXTURED OR BUSH-HAMMERED FINISHES ARE FEASIBLE. THE CHOICE FOR THE SURFACE FINISH DEPENDS MORE ON THE DESTINATION OF USE OF THE MATERIAL THAN ON THE OPPORTUNITIES OFFERED BY THE PRODUCTION PROCESS: FOR INDOOR APPLICATION, IT IS ALWAYS RECOMMENDED TO GUARANTEE THE NECESSARY ANTI-SLIP COEFFICIENT AND THE EASY CLEANING OF THE CERAMIC SURFACE (FOR FURTHER INFORMATION HTTP://WWW.MIRAGE.IT/AREA-TECNICA/ISTRUZIONI-PER-LUSO-E-LA-MANUTENZIONE/).

TIMELINE

  • APPLICATIONS AND PROJECTS MUST BE SUBMITTED BY 1 MARCH 2014;
  • ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE WINNER BY 21 MARCH 2014;
  • FURTHER DATES WILL BE COMMUNICATED ON THE DEDICATED WEBSITE.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

THE BEST PROPOSALS WILL BE REWARDED BY A JURY AND WILL BE SELECTED ACCORDING TO THREE CRITERIA:

  • CREATIVITY;
  • TECHNICAL-PRODUCTIVE FEASIBILITY;
  • INNOVATION POTENTIAL COMPARED TO ALREADY EXISTING PRODUCTS.

OUTPUT

THE MINIMUM REQUIRED OUTPUT CONSISTS IN A SERIES OF PAGES THAT SHOW AND DESCRIBE THE AESTHETIC PERFORMANCE OF THE PRODUCT:

  • (MANDATORY) SUMMARISED DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT IN A MAXIMUM OF 3,000 WORDS (INCLUDING SPACES) DETAILING THE TITLE OF THE PROJECT, INSPIRATION AND CONCEPT; THE PDF. FILE MUST BE IN ISO A4 VERTICAL FORMAT;
  • (MANDATORY) GRAPHIC PROJECTS (DESIGNS, RENDERING, ETC.) SHOWING THE AESTHETIC APPEAL, THE MATERIAL (SURFACE FINISH), THE COLOUR AND SIZE RANGE, THE PDF. FILE MUST BE IN ISO A2 VERTICAL FORMAT;
  • (OPTIONAL BUT SIGNIFICANT FOR THE PLACEMENT) THE PROJECT MUST BE PRESENTED IN A SETTING IN ORDER TO SHOW THE AESTHETIC APPEAL OF THE PRODUCT;
  • (MANDATORY) POWER POINT PRESENTATION OF 15 SLIDES MAXIMUM TO INTRODUCE THE CONCEPT OF THE PROJECT;
  • (OPTIONAL) 3 MINUTE VIDEO MAXIMUM.

AWARDS

THE JURY WILL APPOINT A WINNER AND A MAXIMUM OF SEVEN MENTIONS OF HONOUR:

  • 1ST PRIZE: AWARD OF € 5,000.00,AND EXHIBITION OF THE PROJECT AT MIRAGE PROJECT POINT IN MILAN DURING THE SALONE DEL MOBILE 2014. THE WINNER WILL ALSO HAVE THE RIGHT TO PERSONALLY SHOWCASE THE PROJECT AT MIRAGE PROJECT POINT DURING THE SALONE DEL MOBILE EXHIBITION; TRAVEL AND ACCOMMODATION EXPENSES WILL BE BORNE BY MIRAGE.
  • 2ND PRIZE: AWARD OF € 1,500.00 AND EXHIBITION OF THE PROJECT AT MIRAGE PROJECT POINT IN MILAN DURING THE SALONE DEL MOBILE 2014.
  • 3RD PRIZE : AWARD OF € 500,00 AND EXHIBITION OF THE PROJECT AT MIRAGE PROJECT POINT IN MILAN DURING THE SALONE DEL MOBILE 2014.
  • FROM THE 4TH TO 7TH PLACEMENT : MENTIONS OF HONOUR AND EXHIBITION OF THE PROJECT AT MIRAGE PROJECT POINT IN MILAN DURING THE SALONE DEL MOBILE 2014.
