Born in Turin in 1956, Enrico Frigerio graduated in architecture in Genoa in 1980 and joined Renzo Piano’s Workshop where he gained experience in his chosen field. It was while working there that he met two humanist engineers, Peter Rice and Tom Barker, who planned structures and feats of engineering with a creative genius pushed beyond theoretical restrictions. In 1991 he founded the Frigerio Design Group, which sees the quality of construction and the relationship with nature and the environment as its top priority.

His most important projects include: the environmentally friendly stand at the Imola race track, Bologna (1991-1992); the office building of RAS insurance company in Milan (1996-1998); the Sambonet headquarters in Orfengo, Novara (2000-2004) and the power plants of the Swiss EGL group (2002-2008). International competitions also include the design for the Conference Centre in Madrid (2007), the award-winning project for the OIC (Organization Islamic Conference) in Jeddah (2008), and the “I tralicci del futuro”, promoted by Terna (2009, second placement). In 2005 Skira publishing released the book “Slow Architecture for Living”, the manifesto of Frigerio Design Group. In 2006 the Touring exhibition “Frigerio Design Group – A Journey in Slow Architecture” (Mandragora) started: inaugurated in Florence, the exhibition then moved to Genova, Milan, Ferrara, Turin, Palermo, Vercelli and ended in 2008 at the Royal Danish Academy in Copenhagen and at the Museum of Modern Art in Prague. In 2008 the project was selected to take part in the “London Festival of Architecture” in the “Sustainab Italy Contemporary Ecologies” and in 2012 it was showcased at the Biennale Exhibition of Architecture in Venice. In October 2013, with their “Cuore verde” project, FDG won the Credit Agricole, “Trophée Horizon 2013” award, an international award that honours projects able to offer sustainable innovation in terms of environment, economy and society. Enrico Frigerio has taken part in numerous conferences and events such as, in 2006, the interview given to the WWF on “Climate generation – naturally efficient” (“Generazione clima – efficienti per natura”); in June 2007 the conference-interview on Slow Architecture at the Architecture Festival of the Triennale in Milan and in July 2008 the meeting “One Architect One Building” during the XXIII UIA World Architect Congress in Turin. IN 2009 Libria published the book “Slow Architecture istruzioni per l’uso”, an essay summarising Frigerio’s thoughts on the theme of “slow” building. In November 2010, 24Ore Cultura published the book “Architettura dell’energia” and in January 2011 Hachette published the book “Figerio Design Group” part of the series “I Maestri dell’Architettura”.

PHILOSOPHY Frigerio Design Group is an inter-disciplinary team led by Enrico Frigerio which starts from the concept of the architecture project as the meeting point between different issues: the relationship with nature and local traditions, the building technique and the need of final users. This meeting generates slow architecture, a progressive project that lives the time and extrapolates its resources from the context where it is located. A slow architecture that due to its methods, timing and processes stands out as the contrary to globalisation. A project idea meant as an integrated service able to change research into reality, architectural projects that can be lived in total quality, efficient in terms of energy as well as socially and economically responsible. The history, the social and economic profile as well as the environment and climate are integral part of the project, define its concept and make it unique.
